The Desert Valley Dachshund Club holds a specialty conformation show each fall in the Phoenix metropolitan area. Conformation refers to a dog’s overall appearance and structure which is an indication of a dog’s ability to produce quality puppies. ¬†There are three types of conformation dog shows:

  • All-breed Shows offered for over 175 breeds and varieties of dogs recognized by the AKC (American Kennel Club).
  • Specialty Shows which are restricted to dogs of a specific breed or to the varieties of one breed. The dachshund breed has three varieties based on coat (smooths, longs, and wires).
  • Group Shows are limited to dogs belonging to one the seven groups of dogs. ¬†For example, dachshunds belong to the larger group of hounds.

To be eligible to compete, a dog must:

  • be registered with the AKC
  • be 6 months of age or older
  • be a breed for which competitions are offered
  • meet any eligibility requirements in the written standard for its breed
  • not be spayed or neutered

DVDC’s specialty show has entries from as far as away as Hawaii and Washington state.
